About Park Voyagers

Phase 1: The Afterschool Program
(for children 8-10 years old)

Each of the ten museums is in residence at each park for one week (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) to conduct a series of hands-on lessons relating to the specific content of each museum. Each month, Park Voyagers and their families take a field trip to a museum.  At the end of the 10 weeks, the participants “graduate” to the next phase of the program.

Fall 2008 parks include:
Brainerd Park, Chase Park, River Park, and Touhy-Herbert Park.

Phase 2: The Family Workshop Program
(for children of any age and teens and their parents or guardians)

A team of two museums conducts three family workshops in each of the participating parks. The host park provides dinner, creating a fun and relaxing environment. Museum staff helps parents develop strategies for using museums as educational and recreational resources with their children. Families visit the two museums.

Fall 2008 parks include: Humboldt Park, Lincoln Park Cultural Center, Shabbona Park, West Chatham Park, and Woodhull Park.

Phases 3 & 4:

Families receive a quarterly newsletter that includes information about special museum programs and exhibits and features writing and artwork from participating families.

Phase 3:

Each month, one museum hosts a special Park Voyagers event, with family-oriented activities, special presentations and performances. In addition, families that have successfully completed Phase 2 receive single-use passes to each of the ten museums.

For event schedule click here.

Fall 2008 parks include:
LaFollette Park, McGuane Park, Riis Park, Tarkington Park, and Wolfe Park.

Phase 4:

Families that have successfully completed Phase 3 receive passes good for free admission for an entire year to all of the participating museums—the more you use them, the more they are worth.

  SPECIAL EXHIBITS
Soul Soldiers: African Americans and the Vietnam Era
The most comprehensive exhibition explores the issues of the Vietnam War from an
African American perspective. This exhibit highlights Vietnam and the rise of the Civil
Rights Movement, showcasing such items as soldiers’ uniforms, military recruitment
posters, photographs, and letters sent back home from the soldiers. Audio and videos
show how the era shaped pop culture and influenced the music during the 1960’s and
‘70’s.

A Slow Walk to Greatness the Harold Washington Story
This exhibit reinstallation will take a closer look into the life and legacy of Harold
Washington, Chicago’s first African American Mayor. Twenty years after his passing, new
generations of Chicagoans will have the opportunity to learn about the tremendous
impact that Mayor Washington had on the city and the country.

Red, White, Blue & Black: A History of Blacks in the Armed Services
The call to serve has always had a special significance in conferring the highest claim
of citizenship and patriotic responsibility. However, the irony for more than 14 million
black men and women who have served in the armed forces, the right to serve, fight,
and die for America has been a battle of its own. This exhibit is inspired by those whose
deeds have gone unnoticed, and by those who have fought this country’s external
enemies while having to fight the internal enemies of racism and inequality.
